How to Wash & Care for Your Viscose Saree So It Lasts for Years

A Maatrika viscose saree is an investment — in beauty, in tradition, and in the comfort of your everyday life. With the right care, it will remain as soft and vibrant as the day it arrived. Viscose is not a difficult fabric to care for, but it does have its preferences. Here's everything you need to know.

Always Hand Wash — Your Saree Will Thank You

Viscose is a delicate fabric when wet. Machine washing — even on gentle cycles — creates friction and tension that can stretch or distort the fibres. Always hand wash your viscose saree in cold or lukewarm water. Use a mild detergent or even a small amount of hair conditioner, which keeps the fabric soft and prevents rough textures from developing over time.

"Wash it the way you'd want to be washed — gently, with care, and never in a hurry."

No Twisting. Never Wring.

When viscose is wet, it is at its most vulnerable. Wringing or twisting the fabric to remove excess water can permanently damage the fibres and distort the shape of your saree. Instead, gently press the saree between two clean towels to absorb water, then hang it on a flat surface or a wide hanger in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade colours over time.

Ironing: Low Heat is the Rule

Viscose can be ironed — in fact, it responds beautifully to a light press and emerges looking fresh and crisp. But always use a low-to-medium heat setting. High heat can scorch or weaken the fabric. For best results, iron while the saree is slightly damp or use a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Storage: Fold Softly, Store Clean

Store your viscose sarees clean and dry, folded along the original fold lines or rolled loosely to prevent sharp creases. Avoid storing in plastic bags, which trap moisture and invite mildew. A breathable cotton bag or muslin cloth is ideal. Tuck a neem leaf or a small sachet of lavender to keep insects away naturally.

Dry Cleaning: When in Doubt

If your saree has heavy embellishments, delicate borders, or special prints you're unsure about, take it to a trusted dry cleaner. For everyday viscose sarees without heavy embroidery, careful hand washing at home is completely sufficient.

Your Maatrika saree is made to last. Treat it with the same care you'd give to anything precious — and it will reward you with years of beauty and softness.
